The writing has been on the wall for some time, but it appears as if the deal for the American right back DeAndre Yedlin is all but inked, per reports from ESPN FC.
The 23-year-old is scheduled to take a physical on Wednesday in what appears to be the last step in Tyneside’s courtship of him. He was seen in attendance at Tuesday’s fixture versus Cheltenham Town, and thus it appears the battle for the defenders services will show Newcastle up top. He’s been rumored to have been targeted by Sunderland — whom he spent most of last season with on loan — as well as clubs and Italy and Germany, but the price from those clubs appear to have not been right for Tottenham.
Yedlin capped just once in the Premier League with Tottenham after signing with them two years ago, but did appear in 21 matches while on loan to Sunderland during the 2015-16 campaign. He also has 39 international caps with the United States.
The transfer fee is a reported £5 million (6.6 million USD), and, all things considered, will likely be worth it if he plays in top form. What’s more, it will help further establish a back line that certainly needs some help and is looking for an identity as well, with a seeming revolving door of players cycling through.
More details to follow as they develop.
