Transfer Rumor of the Day: Demba Ba

Could Ba be kissing the pitch at St. James' next season? - Alex Livesey

Ba may be on the market, because why not.

On January 2, Demba Ba left Newcastle for Chelsea. On February 4, Ba's Blues came to St. James' Park, where he was greeted with a kick in the face from Fabrico Coloccini. You may have forgotten that part, as Moussa Sissoko scored two late goals to lift Newcastle to a 3-2 win and the whole bit with Ba was largely summed up as, "its too bad he couldn't play longer in the match....SISSOKO!!!!"

So, could Ba possibly come back to Tyneside? Quite possibly!

With Jose Mourinho now installed at Chelsea, they will surely now step up their pursuit of a new star striker, and with Ba already behind Fernando Torres in the pecking order, and Romelu Lukaku back in the reckoning at Stamford Bridge, the Senegalese player could find himself a bit part player after just six months at the club.

Ba is a world class striker, and his scoring touch was sorely missed from Newcastle's campaign. How bad was it? Despite leaving in January, Ba was still (by five goals) Newcastle's leading goal scorer in the Premier League (Papiss Cisse scored 13 goals on the season in all competitions).

The article linked says that there would be concern about pairing Cisse and Ba up front, because it might not compliment Cisse. The season before, Ba scored 16 goals and Cisse 13. I don't know about you, but I'd take that again.

I couldn't find much about what sort of fee Ba might command, but 10 million pounds may be in the ballpark.

There is, of course, the unpleasantness of how Ba left Newcastle in the first place. But, goals heal old wounds in a hurry. Newcastle need goals (and a striker is a summer target), Ba wants to play regularly (he was just dropped from the Senegalese national team) so a reunion wouldn't be hard to fathom. Though Coloccini may have to apologize should it happen. What do you think?
