We're roughly half-way through the two week break between yet another 5-goal concession in London and the opportunity for healing v. Wolves. If only there were something Newcastle happening this weekend to receive our attention! Fear not! Even though Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup to Brighton, there is tasty cup goodness to be enjoyed this weekend. The First Team and Reserve squads of Newcastle United WFC both have matches in the Sagicor NFA Women's Cup competition on Sunday. If both squads come through their matches, it could set up a First Team v. Reserves match in the semifinals of the competition.
The First Team match will feature two squads that have only three losses between them on the season. From the NUWFC Official Website:
Ashington Ladies Football Club currently sit top of the Northumberland County Women’s League having lost only one game all season, their opening day fixture against last season’s champions Lowick United. It is the club’s aim to gain promotion to the Northern Section of the Regional League and having since beaten Lowick in the return fixture the League title is now in the hands of Ashington. The management team of Chris Sayer & John Sparrow have set the girl’s a target – Win every remaining game & they win the title so NUWFC will have to make sure they realise that Ashington mean business when they visit Coach Lane on Sunday.
The Reserves are matched up with Percy Main in the final 8 of the cup- from the Official Website, here are some quotes from the Reserves manager:
NUWFC Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton said ‘As expected this weekends fixture against Lincoln City was postponed due to a frozen pitch and with the first teams game also called off we all decided to arrange a serious full match day friendly against each other. It turned out to be a great game of football and give Adam and myself a chance to look at the new players who have come in to the squad and also try players in different positions which proved very beneficial to us , the game also give the 2 teams much needed match practice after the last 3 weeks games being postponed’
‘This Sunday give us a welcome break from our now busy league schedule and sees us up against Northumberland ladies league side Percy Main Ladies in the last 8 of the county cup who after looking at there league position and form will be a very hard game for us but a game which we are looking forward to and will be well prepared for and after watching the team play on Sunday against our very strong first team and have got to feel confident that if we take this performance into next weeks cup game could be looking at a semi -final place’
