Aston Villa hung on for a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur (with some brave defending, I might add), meaning that Newcastle can still capture third or fourth place with a win against Everton next Sunday and some help. The new table looks like this:
3 Arsenal 37 67 +24
4 Tottenham Hotspur 37 66 +23
5 Newcastle United 37 65 +7
6 Chelsea 36 61 +21
Newcastle hold no tiebreakers, so a draw against Everton will do no good, except maybe to hold off Chelsea for fifth place. The fixtures next week of course happen all at the same time, so there will be plenty of scoreboard watching.
Everton vs. Newcastle
West Bromwich Albion vs. Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Fulham
Chelsea vs. Blackburn Rovers
Chelsea still have a game in hand, a rematch of the FA Cup Final at Anfield on Tuesday. We will not know if fourth place will be enough to qualify for the UEFA Champions League until Chelsea contest the final in Munich on May 19.
