Manchester United lead Newcastle United 1-0 at halftime of their League Cup Round 3 match thanks to a goal in the 43rd minute from Anderson, a screamer from the edge of the box that Rob Elliot could do nothing about. Until Anderson's strike, the teams were fairly even, though Tom Cleverley missed an open net earlier in the half that could have put the Red Devils on top.
Newcastle have been reasonably disciplined about building from the back, but they've lacked tenacity in the box. Gabriel Obertan in particular has performed his bit of running past all the defenders on his side of the pitch, only to produce a poor cross. To be fair, Shola Ameobi hasn't exactly provided the best support, as he has been shut out by the Manchester defense. Newcastle's best chances have come from set pieces, which doesn't really say much positive about the buildup. Papiss Cisse is on the bench, and if things don't change quickly, Alan Pardew may send him out to see if he can reverse his recent misfortunes.
