Newcastle United announced the signing of 17 year-old center back Kevin Mbabu from Swiss side Servette Thursday. Mbabu had made one appearance for the senior team.
It's immediately evident that this signing is one for the distant future. Sometimes it's these moves that barely get the pulse moving that end up paying dividends later down the line. Reserve team manager Willie Donachie agrees:
Kevin is strong, confident, skilful and a very good prospect. He still has a lot to do as he is only 17 years old, but I saw him playing for Switzerland Under 19s against Scotland and he did really well.
Mbabu was reportedly connected to several Premier League clubs at the beginning of the transfer window for as much as £1 million. A final transfer fee has not yet been announced.
