Loic Remy got Newcastle off to a flying start against Norwich City, and Newcastle built off a strong first half to earn a 2-1 win over Norwich.
The fans had hardly settled into the seats at St. James' Park when Yohan Cabaye gave nice service off of a corner kick that Remy headed home. You read that correctly, Newcastle scored off of a corner. After 785 days and 386 attempts since doing so, Newcastle scored on a corner.
This seemed to daze Newcastle as much as the fans, as Norwich was able to find a foothold in the match. The Canaries put together some nice attacks and bothered Tim Krul a few times. But, Krul and the backline were up to the task until the offense got going again.
The Magpies, when Cheik Tiote wasn't shooting well over the bar, looked dangerous in attack. Newcastle got another breakthrough when Shola Ameobi headed down a brilliant ball from Moussa Sissoko. The keeper handled Ameobi's header, but Yoan Gouffran was there on the rebound to nod it home and give the home side a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half was largely forgettable for the first 25 minutes. Newcastle were complacent, and Norwich culd not muster an attack. That is until they earned four corners in quick succession. Leroy Fer finally netted home a shot for the Canaries, setting up a nervy final 20 minutes.
Newcastle handled themselves well, and actually got a few scoring chances in. Papiss Cisse just couldn't get a header down off of a cross from Hatem Ben Arfa. Minutes later, Cisse was just offsides when he sprung free on the counter.
It was just enough for Newcastle, as they held on for the 2-1 win. It's Newcastle's third win in a row, and given the club's form against lesser teams on the table, it was a nice win to see.
