Newcastle got goals from Gouffran and Sissoko and held on for a 2-1 win at St. James' Park. The Magpies have now won four games in a row.
Newcastle went into halftime with a 1-0 lead following a Yoan Gouffran goal. Yohan Canaye put in a nice delivery on a corner kick, Shola Ameobi drew in the defense and Gouffran was able to head in a loose ball to put the hosts on front. It was the high mark in a half that was often slow. West Brom never really threatened in the first half. Newcastle had good spells of possession, but none of their shots really troubled Boaz Myhill.
It took the Baggies all of seven minutes into the second half to find an equalizer. Chris Brunt received a nice flick-on in the box and made no mistake. It was an emphatic exclamation on a run of play that saw West Brom dominate play. It was the first time all match that West Brom seriously threatened, and the Baggies made no mistake.
Newcastle managed to answer right back when Moussa Sissoko unleashed an absolute rocket of a strike. Newcastle was able to get a bit of possession and Loic Remy flicked the ball on to a wide open Sissoko who found the back of th net for the first time in 20 matches.
That goal would stand up to be the winner. newcastle controlled the play after the goal for a good fifteen minutes but could not put home an insurance goal. West Brom was able to make some threats late in the second half, but the Newcastle defense held through a combination of luck and bravery.
The win sees Newcastle move up to 5th place in the Premier League. The Magpies have now won 4 in a row. How did the lads do? Rate each player and we'll have a results poll up later in the week.
