Relegation Watch 2013: A Brief Look at the Table

Newcastle remain in 13th place after the week's results.

Stu Forster

Despite a devastating 0-3 loss to Sunderland and some positive results from other relegation candidates, Newcastle remain in 13th place with 5 matches left to play in the 2012-13 Premier League season.

If you're looking at the difference between 13th and 18th and panicking because it's only 5 points, think of it this way: In order to be relegated, every single one of the following teams will have to catch and, in some cases, pass Newcastle: Norwich, Sunderland, Stoke, Villa, and Wigan.* One of those teams will falter in their quest. My money is still on Wigan, despite the game in hand.

*We're assuming that QPR and Reading are dead in the water. It's not a mathematical certainty yet, but it's close.

This week's fixtures:

Norwich City vs. Reading
Queens Park Rangers vs. Stoke City
Sunderland vs. Everton
Swansea City vs. Southampton
West Bromwich Albion vs. Newcastle
West Ham vs. Wigan
Manchester United vs. Aston Villa
