Newcastle United started off a seven day stretch that includes matches with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Liverpool with a surprise win at White Hart Lane. Sammy Ameobi scored within the first 6 seconds of the second half and Ayoze Perez had the winner at 58'.
It was a dreadful first half, and Newcastle were lucky to escape with just a 0-1 deficit. The introduction of Ameobi and his subsequent immediate goal seemed to light a fire under the Magpies, who played with a purpose rarely seen in the nightmare that has been 2014.
There was a whole lot that went wrong, particularly in those first 45 minutes. The defense, which provided a ton of blocks, was nevertheless porous, and they didn't generate too many chances other than the ones they converted. Still, the Newcastle squad that played the second half had a belief about them, and credit should be given to Alan Pardew for making the changes necessary. Sure, they needed some luck in the form of a sleepy Spurs defense and an opportunistic Ameobi, but if it gets them going*, I'll take it.
