Newcastle weren't good enough to advance to the League Cup semifinal Wednesday. It didn't matter what happened in goal, because the Toon weren't going to score. Still, this is a backbreaker:
That was the winner in the 18th minute. Mike Williamson and Jak Alnwick would combine to be a revolving door for two more frankly pedestrian goals from Spurs, and just like that, Newcastle were eliminated from the League Cup. EDIT: Alnwick just conceded another rebound on a ball he should have held onto.
There were other things that happened, too. Both Rémy Cabella and Emmanuel Rivière whiffed on a superb Ayoze Perez cross, and the team failed to otherwise threaten Michel Vorm's goal, save for a stray Moussa Sissoko shot here and there. It seems a little unfair to pile on the goalkeeper when the team couldn't score. But still: did you see that play?
The Magpies next host Sunderland on Sunday, having now lost three of their last five in all competitions, conceding 8 goals in the last 120 minutes. Newcastle haven't defeated the mackems since August 2011, and will start either Alnwick or 17 year-old Freddy Woodman in goal. Oh, and Sunderland didn't have to play in the middle of the week.
There will be blood.
