Newcastle United advanced to the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Gillingham, and on Wednesday they found out that they would once again face a long midweek trip, as they were drawn to play Crystal Palace away.
Palace, who will visit Newcastle this Saturday for a Premier League fixture, advanced to this stage by thumping Walsall 3-0. They have lost both of their league matches to start the season.
The match will be contested during the week of September 22, which will be in between league matches with Hull City (at home) and Stoke City (away). Alan Pardew surprised supporters when he named a strong squad to face Gillingham, a League One side, but they were unable to impress, their only tally coming on an own goal. Should the team continue to struggle over the next several weeks, we could see a very different lineup altogether for this third round match.
