Follow Newcastle United's transfer deadline live

The end of silly season is nigh. Ride it out with us as we keep track of all of Newcastle's dealings throughout the day.

Nigel Roddis

Deadline Day has arrived. It's a day filled with helicopters, false hope, and people milling around behind Sky reporters in the hopes that people will make fun of them on Twitter. Also, signings. We'll be keeping track of all the rumblings related to Newcastle United here, and we hope that this will be the hub for discussion on the site. If you see something, say something in the comments. Happy End of Silly Season!

Updates

(All times BST)

12:19 pm: The rumored Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to Roma deal is nearing completion, and it looks like Roma may be paying only 20% of his wage, which makes this an even odder move. (The Chronicle)

12:28 pm: One name that we're sure to see thrown around a lot today is Hatem Ben Arfa, who is on the outs at Newcastle United. Some less-than-reputable sources are reporting today that he's rejected a bid to Birmingham City, but that has been unconfirmed.

12:31 pm: Here's the source for the Ben Arfa to Birmingham speculation: Sky Sports News. It appears that HBA is holding out for something better than the Championship, and Newcastle seem to be desperate to move him. Something's going down today.

12:43 pm: Newcastle's most desperate need is undoubtedly center back, but with Emmanuel Rivière not scoring to start the season and loanee Facundo Ferreyra languishing in the reserves, a striker would be welcome as well. One name being thrown around in Jermain Defoe. There's no connection to NUFC in the media that I can see, but speculation will build as the deadline approaches. Toronto FC sacked manager Ryan Nelsen this weekend, and Sky Sports is reporting that he wants back in the Premier League.

1:03 pm: Defoe update:

1:08 pm: A few national journalists are tweeting that Newcastle have joined the race for Matija Nastasic, who has been linked to both Tottenham and Arsenal. This seems rather unlikely, but there it is.

1:20 pm: The Nastasic story is picking up steam, as The Shields-Gazette have picked it up, claiming that Newcastle want him on loan.

1:49 pm: Falcao has joined Manchester United, which somehow makes Danny Welbeck "more available," as if they weren't shopping him aggressively already. Newcastle are one of several clubs said to be interested.

1:57 pm: Nastasic hype continues to build:

2:22 pm: Newcastle United will not be getting Danny Welbeck in on loan today. The loan fee and wages are too much for Newcastle it is being claimed.

4:00 pm: All is quiet with 7 hours to go. Will Hatem Ben Arfa be moving? Can Newcastle replace Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa?

4:38 pm: Interesting word choice. Not loan?

4:53 pm: Because rolling with 3 CBs is totally a good idea.
