It looks like USA-based Newcastle fans don't have much to be disappointed about after all. Swansea City announced on their website that the Dallas tournament is no longer taking place. Swansea's group stage opponents, Liga MX's Pachuca and La Liga's Malaga, pulled out of the tournament hours before it was scrapped. This 6 team, week long tournament originally slated Newcastle United per early speculation.
The tournament was later announced without listing Newcastle as one of the teams. We presumed this was because of their ongoing relegation battle at the time. Perhaps it was because of the instability of the plans so soon to the tournament taking place. It could also have something to do with training and matches in temperatures potentially reaching over 100°F (38C). Right now, none of these things matter because it's flat out not happening.
Right now, this leaves Swansea, Ligue 1's runner-up Lyon, and Malaga all without solid preseason plans. This summer could see all of these teams stay close to home for a variety of reasons. The Premier League starts a couple weeks early on August 8, and there is strong competition to market any of these teams against existing matches this summer--the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Women's World Cup, and the star-studded International Champions Cup.
Could any of these clubs step up and host a tournament of their own? Only time will tell. Keep checking back with us as we report all preseason news related with the Toon.
