The circumstances of his departure from Newcastle United were contentious at best. Jonas Gutierrez, who had defeated cancer and returned to score the goal that locked up the final matchday escape from relegation for Newcastle United was informed along with Ryan Taylor through a single phone call from former "manager" John Carver that the pair would not be offered new contracts by the club.
The Argentine, who is beloved by Newcastle United fans for his work ethic and dedication to the club, has landed on his feet as reports are being confirmed that he has joined La Liga side Deprtivo de la Coruña on a free transfer. Players move on in the modern game, but Gutierrez (along with current club captain Fabricio Coloccini, it must be said) showed tremendous loyalty to the club in going down with them following the 2008-09 season and leading them back up in record-breaking fashion. Many players who move on end up with mixed reviews from most fan bases, but Gutierrez will always be remembered with a great fondness by the vast majority of the Toon Army.
If you needed reminding of the relationship that the Newcastle fans had with Jonas, who had been actively frozen out by Alan Pardew before being handed a lifeline by Carver, take a moment to remember that roar when he scored v. West Ham. Cissé... Colback... ... ... GUTIERREZ! Remember how he eschewed celebrating with Carver and most of his teammates to have the one glorious moment with the fans.
Thank you for everything Jonas. Good luck in your new adventure at la Coruña. You deserve every second of it.
