Ian Cathro has left the club. It became official a couple days ago. But we’re not here to tell you news that you already know happened, that’d be quite pointless. The question is who will replace Cathro in Rafa Benitez’s inner circle of management?
Ian Cathro was a young but talented coach. Despite being part of the disaster that was the Steve McClaren era, Benitez decided to keep the Scot on because of strong references in favor of him. Any young coach would be lucky to shadow Benitez, and that without a doubt had an effect on clubs looking for newer managers.
Steven Gerrard is set for a potential move into Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff as a coach. If that is the case, Gerrard will be hoping to one day land the manager’s position at Liverpool in the future. It’s what he wants, and nothing more. However, it’s all just a rumor. With Ian Cathro gone, the assistant position at Newcastle United is open, and Gerrard may very well take it to reunite with the manager that made his career.
Newcastle United is unlikely to suffer following Cathro’s departure, however, Benitez has stated that he is in no rush to quickly fill the void. Not sure whether that’s good news because Benitez is confident that he’ll find the right man soon enough, or bad news because, well, we need an assistant.
Ryan Giggs is available, however, all Giggs wants is to manage Manchester United. And if you ask me, he should be given a chance after the failures of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and now Jose Mourinho.
I do not believe that Benitez should take his time replacing Cathro. It is a huge void, and we’ll need a replacement as soon as possible.
