Newcastle United is on an amazing run of form. Despite a disappointing loss, they managed to pick themselves up and get back on the wagon with a victory over Wolverhampton. All-in-all, I'm really enjoying this season. But fans are getting very excited over Daryl Murphy after his debut.
I'm not.
Don't get me wrong, Daryl Murphy is an amazing player with loads of experience to bring to the club. He has experience that the other three strikers of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dwight Gayle, and Ayoze Perez don't have. That alone can be a reason to sign a player. I was a big proponent of signing Jesus Gamez, because he brought experience to a defense that desperately needed it. But Daryl Murphy isn't bringing anything that we don't already have.
He's fast, he's great with the ball, and if he doesn't score someone else is bound to because of his playmaking. That is great, but overall, it's not going to keep Murphy as the top striker. There is a lot of competition for top striker, and Dwight Gayle has done more than enough to earn it.
What Murphy brings is experience, and that's great, but overall, it's nothing to gush about. He had a great first game. Grant Hanley had a horrible first game for the club, and people gushed about his performance against Wolverhampton as well. Before you know it, fans will be bashing Murphy as a horrible signing.
