Adam Armstrong will not be returning to Newcastle United to finish the season. Instead, the striker will remain at Barnsley where he has been quiet so far.
It’s somewhat disappointing to see Adam Armstrong not return to Newcastle United, because I had expected Rafa Benitez to look to Armstrong as a potential shoulder to lean on for some offense moving into the second half of the season. But it won’t be as Barnsley feels that their need for him warranted a loan extension.
Adam Armstrong is one of the hottest prospects at Newcastle United, and it’ll be interesting to see what Benitez makes of him next season. But I believe that Armstrong’s time at Barnsley will not be seen as an overwhelming success. Falling short of the great time he had Coventry last season where in 40 matches he scored 20 times.
In Barnsley’s defense, they haven’t been doing terrible this season. They are two spots away from a playoff spot and are in the race to get there. But my problem is with our own prospect having only played in 14 of the 25 matches Barnsley’s played this season so far. While three goals is by no means a strong number, Armstrong isn’t getting the development that I think many fans had expected he would receive.
If Benitez takes Armstrong’s struggles to heart, the young English starlet may find it difficult to make a place for himself as he is struggling in the same league as his home club.
We’ll make sure to update the news as time goes on.
