Newcastle make move for Fulham midfielder

Newcastle have inquired about the possibility of signing the Fulham captain, who has bagged five goals this season, to go along with three assists.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United have approached Fulham in the hope to sign their talismanic midfielder Tom Cairney.

Fulham however, are digging their heels in this January as they bid to keep hold of him. Having signed from Blackburn for only £3.5 million in the Summer of 2015, the Scotsman has been a standout for the West London outfit.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic said:

“Tom Cairney is so important to us.”

“He makes us tick and he shows he can do damage to teams. I’m going to guarantee he’s going to stay with us”.

Should Newcastle follow up interest, it would undoubtedly take a massive bid to force Fulham’s hand. A fee of up to £10 million may still not even be enough to prize him to the North East.

It would certainly be the type of signing Newcastle would be looking for in this window, with the side lacking a creative spark in the absence of Jonjo Shelvey. The 25 year old has created 60 chances for team-mates so far this season and is a real threat from 20-30 yards. He is not the fastest player, but makes up for it with his range of passing and his intelligence.

Rafa Benitez is refusing to give away any names, but has hinted that the club do have some irons in the fire with regards to transfers.

“Hopefully I will talk with Lee Charnley in the next couple of days.

“We will see if we can get any movement or good news this week.”

Hopefully new signings can be acquired soon. Attacking reinforcements are especially needed in order to give the team added guile in the final third.
