After a couple of stumbles over their past few games, a thrashing of Preston North End was enough to secure promotion for Newcastle United.
It was expected that the club would not just gain promotion, but gain automatic promotion. It was also another expectation that the club would win the Championship, which is unlikely with Brighton’s lead, manufactured by Chris Hughton.
It isn’t the first time that Chris Hughton has won the Championship, as he did so with Newcastle United several seasons ago.
The club had fans biting their nails as they dropped several points over their past few matches. This gave fans a scare that Newcastle United may be forced to compete in the Championship playoff, or even worse, miss out on relegation altogether.
The promotion comes just one season after Newcastle’s ill-fated Premier League campaign spearheaded by Steve McClaren. The disaster led to perhaps one of the greatest steals in modern day football. The signing of Rafa Benitez.
Benitez chose to remain with the club despite failing to save the magpies from relegation. With promotion secured, it is likely that Rafa Benitez will remain with the club for at least another season, however, he signed a three-year contract meaning he’s contracted through 2018.
The beginning of the season started off as rocky as the end of the season. But let’s just say the in between was pretty fantastic. So now we can look forward to Benitez and Newcastle United doing work where they belong:
In the Premier League.
We’re back.
