New League, New Look - Newcastle Unveils 2017/18 Home Kit

New, comment

Spoiler - it’s pretty great

Newcastle United has unveiled its home kit for the 2017/18 season. Leaks and rumors surrounding the kit have been swirling through the internet for the past month, and images of the new kit appear to confirm all that has been speculated.

The new kit, which can be seen below, will be the first to feature new sponsor FUN88, an Asian gambling site that has previously partnered with Burnley FC and Tottenham Hotspur, serving as the former’s kit sponsor from 2014 to 2015. This will be the first of a three-year deal with FUN88 as the official kit sponsor of Newcastle United. The 2017/18 season will be the ninth in which PUMA has served as manufacturer, a contract that runs through 2020.

L-R: Macdonald, Lascelles, Gayle, Hayden, Beardsley

The kit also includes a new crest commemorating the 125th anniversary of the club. In that same spirit, Newcastle included club legends Bob Moncur, Frank Clark, Malcolm Macdonald and Peter Beardsley in the modeling of the new shirt. The official release further mentions that numbers and lettering on the back of the shirt will be in red, “a nod to the style worn by many of the club’s greatest ever players and teams over the years.”

The kit features a Henley collar, something last utilized in the 2012-2013 home kit. The kit will also lack a solid back panel for numbers and lettering for the second year in a row following a long stretch of not extending stripes around the back. Newcastle will continue to wear its classic black shorts and will feature solid black socks with white trim at the top.

The new kit is notable for what is present (lots of stripes, a commemorative crest) as well as what is lacking – anything that ISN’T stripes. With this year’s edition, we are spared design elements like blue accents to the black stripes, large black chevrons on the chest, or strange jagged edges to the stripes that make the kit look wrinkled.

The second and third kits will be released by the club during the summer, and it would be great to see the club continue the trend of honoring tradition with a nod to this classic away kit. The new kit will be available for sale beginning June 15th.
