Earlier today reports surfaced that former Newcastle Defensive Midfielder Cheick Tiote had died.
Tiote reportedly collapsed during training for the second tier Chinese Club Beijing Enterprises. He was then rushed to the hospital where he died. It is speculated that he died from a heart attack.
His death was confirmed within an hour after the story first broke by his agent Emanuele Palladino in a statement.
“I can confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises,” said his agent.
Many people including former teammates of Tiote, journalists, and public figures have tweeted in remembrance for Tiote, calling for prayers and support for his family. Most Notably Demba Ba and Jonas Gutierrez were among the first people to make a public statement on Tiote’s death.

The Ivory Coast midfielder’s professional career began with Dutch side Anderlecht in 2005, before moving to FC Twente 3 years later. he then was signed by Newcastle in 2010 where he amassed 139 appearances. He is a hero among fans for his lone goal in his Newcastle career that occurred during the 4-4 draw against Arsenal. Tiote also played a large roal for the Ivory Coast National team, appearing 52 times for them from 2009-2015. The midfielder also had started a fashion line while he was playing for Newcastle.
