Why Newcastle United is looking at keepers

My oh my. I know we all thought that this summer’s transfer window was going to be a big blockbuster. But so far, it’s been a massive ballbuster. Only Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune have joined the club on permanent contracts. We missed out on Tammy Abraham, and most recently the potential to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan from Chelsea. How many more players are going to slip through the cracks before Rafa Benitez gets fed up?

But according to some sources, Newcastle United is looking at a potential deal for PSG keeper Alphonse Areola. I know, you’re getting giddy just thinking about it.

Disclaimer: I do not watch The Bachelor.

But before we get all giddied up for the ride that could be amazing with Areola, we have to ask ourselves why the club is looking at spending money on a future star keeper when we already have a handful of keepers to begin with?

If you have been paying any attention to the news lately (not the Donald Trump Jr. news) then you would have heard that Newcastle United is looking at a potential swap deal for Karl Darlow and Middlesbrough’s Adama Traore. A winger with so much potential he could be in his own class in a couple years with the right management.

So Newcastle could be looking to give themselves another young keeper that has starting potential to replace Karl Darlow should the club sign Traore in a swap deal, thus saving them money and giving them two class players with loads of potential.

But let’s take a step back and remember who we are. We’re Newcastle United. Amazing things don’t happen to us, we lay down and take it like we’re a second class club with no money or fanbase. But then again, Rafa Benitez is in charge, and he could very well be plotting something amazing that could affect the club for years to come.

Fans have been questioning the reasoning behind looking for a keeper with Darlow, Elliot, Krul, and Woodman already in the ranks. With four keepers, that doesn’t leave much room for a fifth, let alone one that will be fighting for playing time. In the Premier League, Karl Darlow is a backup at best right now. However, he does show a lot of promise. Him and Areola are around the same age, which means Newcastle is getting a comparable keeper with a far better track record in competitive leagues, and trading away a player that may have become surplus to Benitez’s plans should he land Adama Traore.

Here’s to hoping that this is some real news, because I’m really getting tired of fake news.
