Rafa Benitez has today confirmed that last season's top goalscorer Dwight Gayle has trained and is available for selection on Sunday. He had missed the last two pre-season friendlies due to concerns over his hamstring.
Good news for Gayle, but not so good news for DeAndre Yedlin, who will miss the first couple of weeks of the season because of a hamstring injury of his own. New signing Javier Manquillo is in line to make his debut.
Florian Lejeune is another of the new boys that looks set for his first competitive outing in a Newcastle shirt. The Frenchman has looked excellent during pre-season and will probably keep captain Jamaal Lascelles out of the side.

Rolando Aarons is fit and ready for the new season and hopes are very much high for the youngster, as always. However, given the form of Christian Atsu, he seems the more probable to play on the left flank. Matt Ritchie will no doubt start on the opposite side.
Other recruits Jacob Murphy and Mikel Merino are likely to be named on the substitutes bench to begin the season.
Jonjo Shelvey will captain the side in Lascelles' absence and the successful partnership of Shelvey and Hayden will likely remain intact when Spurs visit Tyneside.
Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier suffered minor ligament damage last weekend and will miss the season opener. They are stretched at right-back and may have to revert to a back five, with Moussa Sissoko playing as a wing-back.
Controversial defender Danny Rose is still out after missing the second half of last season. Ben Davies will slot into left-back.
Moussa Dembele will start, but Victor Wanyama may only be fit enough for the bench. Harry Winks could well be trusted to partner the Belgian in the middle of the park.

Erik Lamela is still sidelined by a long-term hip injury, whilst another winger, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, is missing due to illness.
Heung-Min Son has been suffering from a wrist injury during pre-season, but is available for Mauricio Pochettino.
Christian Eriksen will play, as will Dele Alli. They will form two thirds of Spurs' excellent attacking trio, along with last season's top goalscorer Harry Kane.
Likely line ups
Newcastle: Elliot, Manquillo, Lejeune, Clark, Dummett, Shelvey, Hayden, Ritchie, Ayoze, Atsu, Gayle
Tottenham: Lloris, Dier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sissoko, Winks, Dembele, Davies, Alli, Eriksen, Kane
Score prediction: Newcastle United 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
