Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest - Another League Cup run?

After a miserable start to their Premier League season, Newcastle will play host to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Rafa Benitez could be without Dwight Gayle as last season's top scorer is suffering from a bug which ran through the entire dressing room this week.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was left on the bench for the whole game at Huddersfield, but may well be given a start. Joselu will also be hoping to play and get himself up and running with his new club.

DeAndre Yedlin remains doubtful, and the likelihood is that the American will be forced to sit out until after the international break. Javier Manquillo will continue to deputise at right-back.

Karl Darlow is in with a shout of starting in goal, although Freddie Woodman will also fancy his chances.

Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett will not feature for the Magpies for at least a few more weeks. Lejeune has damaged ankle ligaments, whilst Dummett is nursing a hamstring injury.

Chancel Mbemba, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles are the only senior options at Centre-Back, although Mikel Merino and Isaac Hayden can slot in there if needed.

Forest manager Mark Warburton has hinted that Daryl Murphy will be rested for the tie, meaning the Irishman won't get the opportunity to play against his former club.

“It is about looking after him", Warburton said. He also went on to say that "Jason Cummings is waiting in the wings". It appears the latter is in with a bigger chance of starting.

It is also likely that Chris Cohen will not play any part in the game. The midfielder is coming off the back of an injury, and will not be rushed back into action so soon.

Ex-Sunderland man David Vaughan looks probable to start the game, along with the likes of Michael Mancienne and Eric Lichaj.

Armand Traore is another former Premier League man that is set to feature. He will take up his usual position at left-back.

Likely line ups

Newcastle: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Mbemba, Gamez, Hayden, Diame, Murphy, De Jong, Aarons, Mitrovic

Forest: Smith, Lichaj, Mancienne, Mills, Traore, Vaughan, Bouchalakis, Carayol, Clough, Osborn, Cummings

Score prediction: Newcastle United 2-0 Nottingham Forest
