Reports earlier this morning indicated that Southampton left back and England youth international may be on his way to Newcastle, with news coming an hour or so ago that the likelihood had been upgraded from “possible to probable”:
Chances of #SaintsFC left-back Matt Targett's joining #NUFC on loan has gone from possible to probable. Good player & at 21 needs game time

Things seem to be progressing, as now Graeme Bailey is reporting that Targett is making his way north to complete a loan deal with United for the season:
Now understand that Southampton's Matt Targett is on his way to the North East for a medical ahead of his move to Newcastle.

Targett, 21, came up through the successful Southampton youth academy, making his senior debut for the Saints in 2014. Targett has since made 27 appearances, 25 of which came in the Premier League, recording one assist during that span. The defender is seen as a defense-first left back with the ability to put in quality crosses on his day, and should provide additional depth at the position, hopefully challenging Paul Dummett (when healthy) for the starting spot.
