Three quick goals in a nine-minute period would assure Newcastle a victory against the League Two side, Luton Town. An encouraging, but expected, victory as Newcastle remains undefeated in the year 2018.
The lineup for Newcastle was a bit of a surprise as 3 of the 4 defenders stayed the same and Shelvey and Merino shored up the middle. It appeared that Benitez wanted to secure a win in the 3rd round, a feat that Newcastle has only done 4 times in the previous 10 seasons, by keeping most of the starters the same. Woodman would get the start as the young goalkeeper is still searching for his debut in the Premier League.
Ayoze Perez (x2) and Jonjo Shelvey would be the goal-scorers for Newcastle, capitalizing an encouraging run of play as Newcastle has struggled to find the back of the net for most of their season. Perez now has 3 goals in his past 2 games in all competitions.
One worrying part of the match was Jamaal Lascelles leaving the pitch in discomfort. But after the match Rafa Benitez assured the fans that he was only substituted off due to precautionary reasons and that Lascelles would be just fine.
