Newcastle 1-0 Huddersfield - A massive victory for the Toon

Newcastle would remain in control all game before scoring the game winner in the 80th minute.

After a short 3 week break of Premier League football, Newcastle came out and dominated Huddersfield in a 1-0 victory. The Magpies earned 3 massive points to keep the team 7 points safe from the relegation zone. With 7 matches left on the schedule, theres a bit more breathing room for Newcastle and I’m sure the squad is feeling confident.

Although the scoreline only shows 1 late goal for the Magpies, this game was Newcastle’s to lose. They were in control for the whole match, with 64% of the possession in the home team’s favor. Huddersfield would only attempt 4 shots with none reaching the goal. Newcastle on the other hand had 18 attempts at goal, 3 on target. What really kept Newcastle from scoring more goals was lack of finesse. Gayle did fantastic finding open spaces in front and around the net, but just could not guide the ball to the back of the net.

Slimani would finally make his league debut for Newcastle after he replaced Dwight Gayle at the 75 minute mark. Although he did not have a direct hand in Ayoze Perez’s goal, Slimani’s presence was certainly noticeable as he is a big target who won a few aerial duels. Excited to see more of him.

Now for the goal! It was a matter of time for the Toon to score the game winner. After a handful of squandered chances, Ayoze Perez finally broke the goal line to ultimately secure the 3 points for the home side. Christian Atsu would curl in a cross for a streaking Slimani that Huddersfield’s Lussl would punch away to a waiting Kenedy. The Brazilian would then square the ball perfectly to Perez who calmly passed the ball into the back of the net. A well deserved goal.

Newcastle are now riding a 6 game undefeated streak at home (3 wins and 3 draws), their best stretch of home games since 2014. Newcastle have 3 home games remaining on their schedule and certainly look to keep up their great form.

Who is next? Newcastle is away at Leicester City who currently sit 5 points ahead of the Toon. Should be an exciting game.

Here’s the goal-scorer!
