The Monday night fixture was by no means a pretty match with Bobby Madley being very relaxed with his whistle. Ultimately, Newcastle put up a good fight, but it just wasn’t their day. Here are the player ratings:

Dubravka: The goalkeeper did not have much to do given the fact that Everton only had one shot on target. There was little he could do to stop Walcott’s strike. He adequately collected crosses and commanded his defense. 6

Yedlin: The American fullback made a few vital interceptions and clearances in the first half. He got forward on counterattacks well with his pace, but his crossing was a bit disappointing. 6

Lascelles: The captain kept the defense organized but was prone to a few errors in the first half. He dominated the air and kept Tosun in check. Additionally, he laid off a good ball in the box to afford Gayle a half chance late in the game. 6.5

Lejeune: The Frenchman needlessly conceded a corner early on after miscommunicating with Dubravka. Throughout the game, he defended well and made good contributions going forward towards the dying stages of the game. 6.5

Dummett: The leftback was steady as always on defense. He made several key blocks and interceptions. His sweeping slide tackles are a thing of beauty. Additionally, his competence in the air has proven to be quite beneficial. 7

Diame: He put in quite a shift in the midfield. These types of performances have become the norm for him since the turn of the year. The defensive midfielder broke up Everton’s play all over the field and transitioned the play from defense to attack well. 7

Shelvey: This was not one of his best performances this season. In the first-half, his defensive work-rate was decent, but his passing was a bit inaccurate. As the game progressed, he faded out and ceased to be influential. At times, the game seemed to be happening around him. Truly a shame that it wasn’t his day since Gareth Southgate was in attendance. 5

Ritchie: The winger did well defensively and linked up with Ayoze Perez well. It would be nice to see him be a bit more optimistic going forward though. He often played sideways passes or all the way back to the goalkeeper. 6

Kenedy: The in-form Brazilian didn’t have his best game in attack. However, his defensive contributions were often pivotal to starting counterattacks. Just goes to show that his defensive work-rate and stamina have improved massively since he first joined. 7

Ayoze: As Number 10, he was involved in much of Newcastle’s attack. His positioning and link-up play was impressive. However, the inconsistency that has held Ayoze back was perfectly highlighted by his poor through ball to Slimani after a great initial touch. A better pass there could have put Newcastle in the driver’s seat. 6

Slimani: In his first start for Newcastle, Slimani showcased his talents well but was unlucky to not have a real chance at goal. His hold up play was excellent, and he proved to be quite a menace in the air. Also, he demonstrated that he has enough pace to fit Benitez’s preferred counterattacking style. On defense, he worked his socks off to pressure Everton’s backline. Overall, he looked a bit rusty as a few of his passes didn’t connect. 6

Gayle: When he came on, he offered a different approach to attack. His pace caused Michael Keane all sorts of problems. The out-of-form striker was unlucky not to convert the half- chance presented to him by Lascelles. 6

Merino: Cameo- No rating
