Fabian Schar, pending a medical, will be the next player added to the squad by Rafa Benitez. Schar, who previously played for Deportivo La Coruna of La Liga (now relegated), is a Swiss international who has made 42 appearances for his country, most recently 3 appearances in this past World Cup. The defender has also played for clubs FC Basel through 2012 to 2015 and Hoffenheim through 2015 to 2017.
Benitez has reportedly been eyeing the Swiss defender for some time now and added that “we will do something and we have to do something” when it comes to adding depth in the back. Mbemba being sold and Lejeune possibly requiring to miss some time due to injury makes this addition very important.
The £3m release clause was activated and now we wait on Schar’s medical to see if he will officially be a part of the squad.
