Dan Barlaser was probably the best loan story of last season. The Gateshead-born midfielder had a great year with League One Accrington Stanley. He made 39 appearances with the club and was seen as the glue that held the side together.
Due to his great performance, Newcastle United felt it was necessary to sign him up to a professional contract and have Shola Ameobi do his thing as loan manager. Rotherham United is the lucky club to get him.
For me personally, Barlaser already performed well in League One last year so I was discouraged to see him loaned to League One again, but going to Rotherham, who will be a front runner to finish at the top of the league, will do him well to experience that.
Many at Accrington saw him as one of the best players in the team, with even their manager saying, “With the strike he’s got on him, he should score (a lot) more.” This will be an important step towards being a consistent member of the NUFC first team.
