Newcastle have announced the loan signing of 25 year old Dutch Left Back Jetro Willems. It is reported that this is another loan to buy signing by Newcastle, a club who have truly perfected the art of the loan to buy deal.

Willems is a Dutch international fullback who is most famously known for two things: being the youngest player to appear in the UEFA Euro competition, and being linked to Newcastle.

The Dutch talent is still only 25 years old, despite being linked to Newcastle at least once a window for what feels like forever. He currently plays his football for Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, where he regularly was used as Central Midfield option off the bench.

His rare appearances (and at his preferred position) for Frankfurt can be traced back to two reasons. Willems picked up a red card in his second appearance at Left Back at the beginning of last season which cut into his playing time, and made him somewhat of a risk in the eyes of manager Adi Hütter. Secondly Frankfurt switched formations in order to get the most out of their midfield and attacking talent. The side switched to a pure 3 in the back formation which featured Filip Kostic as a left midfielder/wingback (but mostly Left Mid). This effectively took away any minutes on the left side for Willems, which resulted in him playing CDM and CM for the majority of the season.

Willems versatility is likely his most promising trait. Willems has the technical and athletic ability to play anywhere on the left side of the pitch, and his appearances as a CM displayed his passing ability and comfort on the ball. Willems would slot in perfectly as a Left Wing Back in Steve Bruce’s “system”.

It was confirmed by Eintracht Frankfurt that Willems was in talks with another cub over a potential transfer earlier today. The club was understood to be Newcastle United, as they are the only club linked with him at the moment.

Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette was the first to report that the deal is a Loan to buy (lolz) deal with the buyout fee seemingly unknown at the moment. Willems is the second signing of this window.

The move make sense for all parties involved, as Willems is still a promising player that deserves consistent playing time at a club, Frankfurt essentially have no need for fullbacks, and Newcastle desperately need fullbacks.
