The lads give their picks for the best team performance of the season (hint: it is not the 5-0 defeat to Leicester)

The season review series continues with the staff looking at what they think is the best team performance by Newcastle. This staff award goes out to the match in which Newcastle looked the best they have all season. Opinions are fun because everyone has different ones. That is the case here as members of our staff value different things when discussing Newcastle's best team performance.

Zack Pensak - 4-1 Win over Bournemouth

It had all the makings of a trench war, going way from home against a team entrenched in a relegation fight. However, despite expectation, this was the most relaxed performance I saw the team put in all season. A Jefferson Lerma mistake in the 4th minute led to a composed Dwight Gayle opener, raising the mast for 90 minutes of smooth Newcastle sailing. Allan Saint-Maximin was the star of the show, joining Riyad Mahrez as the only two players to register three assists in a single Premier League match this season. His first assist, a (dare I say?) Messi-like run past five Bournemouth defenders before putting the ball on a plate for an emphatic Sean Longstaff goal, was the most impressive moment of the match. Miggy Almiron and Valentino Lazaro iced the game with two well-taken finishes in the 57th and 77th minutes, and if not for a last minute consolation goal by ex-Magpie Dan Gosling, it would have ended as a completely flawless performance by the Toon.

Mirza Usman Baig - 4-1 Win over Bournemouth

For this one, I have to go with Project Restart victory over Bournemouth. Minus the late goal conceded, it really was the best performance you could ask for. the magician Allan Saint-Maximin bagged a hat-trick of assists, Almiron scored a nice goal, and Lazaro got a chance at his real position and took his goal well off of a beautiful Shelvey pass. Need I go further? Andy Carroll or Joelinton getting on the scoresheet would be the only thing that could have made the day better, but I digress. All in all, Bournemouth truly got played off the pitch on the day, and the team gave the fans a rare near-perfect outing.

Bryan Nelson - 3-2 Win over West Ham

I believe that this match was a brilliant showcase early on as to what this club is capable of with the players it has. ASM was brilliant, Fabian Schar scored, Federico Fernandez scored, and Jonjo Shelvey scored. The passing was nice to see, but we saw some amazing crosses, and that’s what made me really enjoy this match. I love a good header. And that’s what this club should be able to be more successful at. Getting balls in the box setting us up for a crafty goal. There was a lot of excitement there, and it was a memorable match.

Elijah Newsome - 2-2 Draw Against Manchester City

I was tempted to say the 2-2 Everton match like I said in our CHN Radio season review, but I have decided to take this seriously and say the 2-2 Man City draw has to be my favorite team performance of the season.

I think it was just the most enjoyable match to watch all season, as it was honestly a thrilling affair. Every. Single. Goal. was a banger. Literally every goal made your jaw drop, and that is the type of match I love to watch. None of the goals scored against Newcastle were anyone’s fault either. Outside of the two bangers scored by Manchester City (one being one of the best volleys I think I have ever seen), the Newcastle defense held up quite well and frustrated the heck out of Man City.

As far as performance of the season goes, it helps that Newcastle walked away with a draw and didn’t catch a fat L. All in all, it was a thrilling affair against one of the best teams in the league and easily one of Newcastle’s best performances this season front to back

What do you think was Newcastle's best performance of the season? Was it one of these matches or perhaps something else like the 1-0 Manchester United win... Let us know in the comments section or on Twitter, and be sure to vote in the poll!
