The World Cup arrived with six Magpies playing in the group stages: Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, and Callum Wilson for England, Garang Kuol is with Australia, Fabian Schar is part of the Swiss team, and Bruno plays for Brazil.
Of course, these being Newcastle players, all of them made it to the Round of 16 alive and well. After that first knockout round, four of them still remained in contention for the Jules Rimet having reached the quarter-final games. Ah, feels good rooting for the Toon...
Here’s a recap of all that went on Friday, Dec. 9, with more updates to come in the following days as games keep getting played with the World Cup into the knockout stages.

Bruno (Brazil)
Match: BRA vs Netherlands (World Cup)
Bruno had to watch his nation crash out of the World Cup not only for 90 minutes... but for 120... and endure the extra agony of a penalty shootout on top of everything. Ugh, Tite.
When we all thought this game was wrapped up and ready to get sealed and delivered, Croatia decided to flip the script in their favor.
That’s mostly how things unfold with Neymar scoring a true, Santos-era-like golazo by the 105th of extra time only for that effort to get undone by Bruno Petkovic in the 117th minute of playing time.
Penalties wouldn’t give Brazil any love with Rodrygo missing their first one and Marquinhos hitting the post to send Brazil packing home.
Bruno back with Newcastle in the next few days with almost two weeks to spare between now and the next official game. Can’t really complain.
