Norwich City vs. Newcastle match thread: It’s time to break the Canary Lock

Newcastle aims for a top-half position with a win at Norwich today

Norwich is hosting Newcastle at the worst possible time. The Magpies have strung three consecutive victories, all at home, and are entering today’s game with a real chance at going to sleep tonight sitting in the top half of the Premier League table. The Canaries, of course, need a victory much more than Newcastle these days.

Norwich is trailing every other EPL club after 32 games and getting relegated is a virtual lock for the Eastern England team. You never lose hope, though, so if there is a team bound to give a 110% today that’s Norwich City. Too bad for Dean Smith’s side, the recent form is not quite there for the Green and Yellow as they have gone on to win one, draw one, and drop three in their five most recent matches.

Newcastle is coming off a phenomenal two weeks of football in which they defeated a couple of top-half sides (1-0 against Wolves, 2-1 against Leicester) and one of the four FA Cup semifinalists in Crystal Palace (1-0) last Wednesday. No banged-up players are coming back to the starting lineup nor the bench today for the Magpies as all of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, and Kieran Trippier sit this one out hoping to reappear at some point through the remainder of the season (four games after this one yet to be played).

Avoiding relegation feels like a fait accompli for the Geordie Army with 33 games already played and a 12-point gap between Newcastle and 18th-place Burnley (one fewer game disputed). Sit, relax, and enjoy the lads kicking it around Norwich’s pitch today before the brutal—yet extraordinarily appealing—schedule ahead of Newcastle United arrives.

Norwich XI - Krul, Giannoulis, Zimmermann, Hanley, Bryam, McLean, Normann, Lees-Melou, Rashica, Dowell, Pukki

Newcastle XI - Dubravka, Krafth, Lascelles, Burn, Targett, Longstaff, Bruno, Willock, Joelinton, Murphy, Saint-Maximin
