Newcastle started Saturday’s game with a (disallowed) bang, pounced on West Ham’s doubts seconds later, but ultimately got denied a victory with a silly goal-against by Lucas Paqueta as the Hammers snatched one point from St James’ Park.

Let’s assess how each player performed.

7 - Pope: Commanded his area well as ever, couldn’t do much about the goal he conceded.

7 - Schar: Played a part in Newcastle’s goal, not his best night but still looked more than solid.

7 - Botman: As solid as ever, although misplaced a few passes when trying to get Newcastle on the attack.

6 - Burn: Failed to connect to Rice’s corner for West Ham’s goal. From then on though he was assured at the back.

7 - Trippier: Absolutely tireless, kept on going up and down the right, and was unfortunate that his ball to Almiron in the build-up to Willock’s disallowed goal, was just out of play.

8 - Longstaff: An absolute workhorse, covered every blade of grass and produced a lovely assist for Wilson.

8 - Joelinton: When he moved back into midfield he was fantastic, a force to be reckoned with at times.

6 - Willock: A quick-fire start was cruelly denied but not his best night.

(Sub) 6 - Anderson: Not much of an influence on proceedings, he’ll be hoping for more game time in Bruno’s absence.

6 - Allan Saint-Maximin: Wasn’t as influential as he would’ve liked but this was his first league start since August. More to come.

(Sub) 8 - Gordon: He certainly made an impact, some sharp, smart passes, and should’ve had an assist to his name.

6 - Almiron: Continued to run, unlucky not to get an assist with Willock’s disallowed goal. Looks tired and in need of rest.

(Sub) 6 - Murphy: Not much of an impact on the game from the bench.

7 - Wilson: Finally got his goal, it was a long time coming, should’ve had more but that’ll certainly be a confidence boost for him. All-round game play was impressive at times, and his finish on his weaker side was fantastic.
