The summer transfer window is finally open, which means there are going to be rumors of bids, signings, departures, etc. the next few weeks. Newcastle United have been linked to a handful of targets already and have some players departing to other clubs.

Live Blog:

(Times are BST)

7:13 PM: It doesn't appear that Newcastle will be signing midfielder William Vainqueur as there's a report he's signed a new deal with his Belgium club.

Translated: Exclusive: Vainqueur remains with standard! More info in the next few minutes on DH.be

6:02 PM: There are more reports now that Newcastle United have put in an €18 (roughly £15.5) million bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who's asking price is reportedly around £16 million. Anzhi also reportedly bid €20 million for Aubameyang, but he's also indicated he'd prefer to play in England. It certainly sounds like Ashley and company might be serious about bringing in their top striker target.

4:00 PM: Twitter is ablaze with rumors of 31-year old midfielder Matthew Taylor on the verge of joining Newcastle United, but we can't track down an official report or source from anyone in the actual media outside of rumor accounts.

3:49 PM: Though most figure Alan Pardew will remain on as the Newcastle United manager, even with the appointment of Joe Kinnear, there still are links that suggest that fired Brighton boss Gus Poyet could eventually land with the Toon as their permanent manager. The Daily Star notes that Poyet has been linked to Newcastle, Fulham, Southampton, Swansea and Cardiff. Most would consider Poyet an upgrade over Pardew.

3:09 PM: Birmingham City are interested in bringing Shane Ferguson back on a season-long loan, according to Sky Tyne and Wear. Ferguson appears to be pretty far down the pecking order of wingers and full backs at Newcastle, so it would certainly make sense to send him elsewhere and free up a spot on the squad if he's not going to be utilized. Will this once promising prospect ever play for the Toon again?

2:44 PM: The James Perch report gets a little bit of teeth, as Sky Tyne and Wear note that Wigan Athletic have indeed bid for his services. A month ago, The Chronicle noted that Newcastle would be looking for £1.5 million for the utility man. No fee amount has officially surfaced yet.

2:04 PM: Reports out of The Guardian that Newcastle United might have a tough decision on their hands with midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who's been linked with a handful of clubs during the summer. According to The Guardian, Paris Saint-Germain are readying a £20 million bid for Cabaye, which means the Toon will have to weigh the benefit of extra scratch during the transfer window if they accept the bid versus what they lose on the field in Cabaye.

1:59 PM: Newcastle United reportedly put in an €18 million bid on top striker target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a week or so ago, only to have it declined by St. Etienne, but a report in The Journal suggests that Joe Kinnear is eager to have the club's first signing in by the end of the week and could launch another bid for the 24-year old striker.

Joe Kinnear has urged Mike Ashley to kick-start Newcastle United's recruitment drive this week as the club ponder a second bid for top striker target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Kinnear has meetings planned in Newcastle today but The Journal understands he has told Ashley he wants to have delivered a first new signing by Friday, when he is set to take a short, pre-planned break with his family.

1:47 PM: Twitter is ablaze with tweets about James Perch heading to Wigan on a rumored £700k transfer price, but I can't find anything concrete to nail it down. Perch departing Newcastle wouldn't be much of a shocker however, as it seems the Magpies are trying to cut down some of their fringe players.

1:41 PM: The Toon have been linked to a couple of midfielders prior to the official start of the transfer window, but one player the Magpies targeted in the January window has recently bought out the remainder of his contract. William Vainqueur, the 24-year old defensive midfielder, bought out the remaining three years of his contract with Belgium team Standard Liege, according to a report in the Belgium newspaper Walloon (which I have not been able to find online, but multiple tweets are sourcing this). It's possible Newcastle are in talks with the midfielder, since he's now on a free.

1:00 PM: Newcastle United have been linked to 29-year old Aston Villa striker Darren Bent for a few weeks now, and he's said to be happy to make the move to the club so long as Alan Pardew remains the manager, according to The Telegraph. The Toon reportedly are not willing to any more than around £5 million for Bent, as he's clearly not in the plans for Villa going forward.
