Yohan Cabaye scored early, but 10-man Newcastle couldn't hold off Sunderland for 90 minutes.

The pivotal moment in this match was without a doubt the red card shown to Cheik Tiote when he caught Steven Fletcher on the ankle with his studs. Newcastle had already gone up on a Yohan Cabaye rebound goal in the second minute, but the sending off no doubt put Sunderland on the front foot. The Toon held the hosts off for the majority of the match, but finally broke down when Demba Ba deflected a John O'Shea header into his net.

It's telling that the result is seen as a disappointment for the visiting team and a coup for the hosts, and it took Sunderland a long time to take advantage of their many free kicks, corners, and overall possession, even with the man advantage. In the end, they needed help from one of our own. But these are all meaningless platitudes. At the end of the day, it's dropped points against an inferior team (sorry, it's true) for a squad that are trying hard to gain traction in league play. One would have hoped that a long lay-off would have been enough to get their heads right, and it almost was.

But it wasn't. If Newcastle are to right the ship and climb the table like we believe they are capable of doing, they will need to do it now. They now enter an extended stretch of league matches against teams considered to be mid-table at best. If they don't obtain maximum points, that will be a descriptor attached to this squad before they even reach the #StretchOfDoom in December.

Newcastle next play Club Brugge in Europa League play at home on Thursday.

Yohan Cabaye's early goal has Newcastle up at half, but a red card from Cheik Tiote has the visitors on their heels.

Newcastle United lead Sunderland 1-0 in the Tyne-Wear Derby at the Stadium of Light thanks to a 2nd minute goal from Yohan Cabaye, a well-placed shot off a rebound. However, the story of the match so far has been the refereeing, as we might expect with Martin Atkinson taking the center of the pitch. Atkinson made his presence felt early, sending Cheik Tiote off following a reckless challenge that in most matches probably would have been a caution. It wasn't a terribly harsh decision, in my mind, but making a borderline call like that when you've already got a dodgy relationship with the club (see the Nigel De Jong decision) is no way to win friends and influence people.

In any case, Newcastle find themselves a man down, and have already made an adjustment by subbing in James Perch for Shola Ameobi, who has in fact not slain any mackems today. That Shola's dismissal was necessary was indicative of the type of play we saw from the Magpies following the decision. Ameobi had been booked for dissent, and it's a small wonder that Cabaye has not seen the same sort of discipline. The players will need to focus on the task at hand (as opposed to trying to do the referee's job for him) if they hope to make this scoreline a final.

Make your predictions here.

Newcastle is back, and so is the Predictions League. Here are the rules, if you'd like to play:

Before each Newcastle United match, predict the match winner (you may of course select "draw"), final score, and who the goal scorers will be. Also, make a choice on the prop bet (see below).

Deadline is five minutes before kickoff.

Points are assigned as follows:

Correct winner = 2 points

Correct score = 5 points (so correct score + correct winner = 7 total points)

1/2 of correct score = 1 point

Predict total # of goals correctly = 1 point

Each goalscorer predicted correctly = 4 points

Each goalscorer predicted incorrectly = -1 point

Prop bet = +/- 1 point

A clarification on the last part: You don't lose points for failing to predict that Jonas Gutierrez would score in a given week. However, choosing Papiss Cisse will result in loss of a point if he fails to score. Your total score may not dip below 0 in any given week. The winner(s) of each round will get a point added to their total in the table.

This week's prop bet:

How soon will the away section audibly drown out the home support, as heard on the TV broadcast? Before or after the 4th minute?

The hero we need?

I may be out of line here. Not for the 4 words I'm about to post; I'm fine with that. I've not been a good blog manager recently, and for all I know, Jim is hard at work producing a masterpiece of a match review that will cause you to rend your garments and toss your babies at him because it's so beautiful. I wouldn't know because I haven't sent our customary email.

So yes, what follows is a bit of laziness, but it's also the truth. Additionally, I'm not really interested in a lot of the back-and-forth that happens before this derby. It's an amazing tradition that I certainly respect, and please don't ever question the hatred I have in my heart for The Unwashed. But at this point it's sort of like beating up on your younger brother. Eventually, when he stops putting up a fight, it's not even fun anymore.

Okay, that's not the best analogy: I would love nothing more than a win on Sunday. If your weaker brother takes a swing at you, you're going to put him on his backside. But I'm also not going to be the guy that says, "LOL, look at how obsessed they are with us! Did you see what they said after the Bordeaux match? Haha, they were so awful against Manchester City!!1!!one!" They exist, and for that, I want to <strike>beat</strike> obliterate them. But I won't obsess.

So, all of that to say: there's one thing we need this Sunday to achieve certain victory. That's right, I'm speaking of the Geordie legend:
