Newcastle's keeper came on for PKs and came up big.

It seemed like most of this World Cup run would feature no Tim Krul. Newcastle's keeper hasn't seen any action this tournament. That is, until the 199th minute, when Krul was subbed on for penalty kicks. After Costa Rica and the Netherlands played a scoreless affair for 120 minutes.

Given that Krul is 2/20 in penalties for Newcastle, the move was widely criticized. But, the Newcastle man came up big with two massive saves. Krul saved Bryan Ruiz's attempt to give the Dutch a lead. From then, the Dutch and Costa Rica traded goals. Until Michael Umana came up for Costa Rica in a must-score situation.....

Shola was a late sub, and helped Nigeria see it through.

Shola Amobi came on in the 65th minute in Nigeria's 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and helped the Super Eagles pick up a vital three points in their quest to qualify for the knock out stages.

Shola didn't factor into the match all that much, Nigeria using him in a fairly defensive role. His size was an asset in the box with Bosnia making crosses late. He had a successful clearance late in the match to help preserve the clean sheet. Here's his player chart, via FourFourTwo:

Shola was 12 of 13 passing.

The game was plenty controversial, with Bosnia scoring a wrongfully disallowed goal and Nigeria scoring when maybe they shouldn't. That happened prior to Shola's arrival on the pitch.

The win means Nigeria is ever closer to securing a place in the knockout stages. With four points, they are second in the group, with Bosnia eliminated. Iran has one point and would need a win over Bosnia to tie. Meanwhile, what has been a fairly defensively stout Nigeria will take on a less than impressive Argentina.

Sissoko's goal was Newcastle's first of the 2014 World Cup.

Moussa Sissoko scored and Mathieu Debuchy played 90 minutes as France defeated Switzerland 5-2 in a match that wasn't that close on Friday.

Sissoko's goal was France's fifth, so obviously the match was well in hand, but he was an instrumental part of the French midfield from the start. That he scored while playing down the right wing will only serve to reignite the debate over his most effective position in Alan Pardew's midfield, but today is about celebrating Newcastle's first goal of the 2014 World Cup.

Mathieu Debuchy had a solid match as well, and while the situation didn't dictate that he overlap nearly as much as he did for the victory over Honduras, he made several huge defensive plays, including a vital tackle in the box when the outcome was still somewhat in question.

Former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye also started, and he hit the bar on a rebound after Karim Benzema had his first half penalty saved.

Of course, the margin was such that the miss didn't really matter, but fans who are still sore over Cabaye's departure might take some small measure of joy in this bit of misfortune. He was also booked in the waning moments, and will miss France's next match against Ecuador.

That match will be academic from Les Bleus' point of view, as they will advance to the Round of 16.

Howay Sissoko!

Tiote had a decent outing in Ivory Coast's loss | Adam Pretty

Tiote had a classic Tiote game: as in, he got a booking and had a couple shots from range.

Cheick Tiote had another decent outing, as he played all 90 minutes in Ivory Coast's 2-1 loss to Colombia in group action.

Tiote wasn't as crisp with his passing as he was in the opener, but he still had a good outing. Here's his passing chart, via FourFourTwo:

In case you don't have time to count, he was 53 of 59 passing. Of course, it isn't a Tiote match until he unleashes his shot that is no where near the goal.

If you had the under in our side bet in the open thread, you won it (O/U on from range shots from Tiote was 2.5).

And, of course, it's not a TRUE Tiote game until he gets booked, which he received in the 90th minute. All in all though, it was a clean match for a player that is known for his physical play. Tiote committed three fouls on the afternoon.

With the loss, Ivory Coast remains at three points in Group C. They will close out group play with a match against Greece on June 24.

The Nigerian striker had a few go's, but couldn't connect against Iran.

Newcastle fans were disappointed when Shola Ameobi wasn't put into the Starting XI for Nigeria today. But, shortly after halftime, the Tyneside hero made his World Cup debut.

Shola had a few cracks at goal late, including an snap header that was defended well by Iran. In the last few minutes, the Nigerian attack tried to pick out Shola, but it was not to be.

France's 3-0 victory had a Newcastle flavor.

Mathieu Debuchy played all 90 minutes and Moussa Sissoko was a 56th minute substitute as France soundly defeated Honduras 3-0 Sunday in Group E play. Honduras played with 10 men for the entire second half after Wilson Palacios was sent off for two bookings just before the halftime whistle.

Debuchy was particularly influential, as he and Mathieu Valbuena torched the left side of the Honduras defense all game long. Following Palacios' exit, he was able to play in an advanced role virtually the entire half (not that he was having any trouble overlapping in the first place). Debuchy featured in the run-up to the third goal, as a corner designed for a long shot from him was deflected to Karim Benzema, who coolly slotted his second tally home.

For his part, Sissoko played a box-to-box type role that suits his playing style (as opposed to the way he's typically deployed in Alan Pardew's formation), and got involved in some decent chances before France packed it in early. At one point, he, Debuchy, and former Magpie Yohan Cabaye (who started and played 64 minutes) combined on a nice sequence that was just enough to make a Newcastle fan's heart ache.

Cabaye also provided the cross on what ended up being counted as an own goal for goalkeeper Noel Valladares. That score was the first real use of the goal line technology in the cup and confirmed a goal that probably would have been disallowed without the aid of the camera.

Cheik Tiote started in the middle for Les Elephants, who defeated Japan on the strength of goals from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho.

Cheik Tiote played all 90 minutes Saturday night as his Cote d'Ivoire squad defeated Japan 2-1 in Group C action.

Tiote started in the pivot of the 4-2-3-1 with Serey Die, a familiar position for him, and the pair effectively funneled Japan's attacks to the wings as they largely refused to build through the middle. Japan grabbed the lead in the first half on a fine effort from Keisuke Honda, but following Didier Drogba's introduction in the second half, Les Elephants capitalized on their chances. Tiote won a ball that led to a 64th minute Wilfried Bony header, and Gervinho added another just a minute later. Naturally, the Blue Samurai fought for an equalizer, but tight defense from Tiote and others ensured the victory for the team in orange.

The day was stolen, however, by the Ivorian crowd, who brought some awesomely ridiculous scarves to Brazil:

The knockout stages will begin on 28 June. Look out for a possible Round of 16 clash between France and Nigeria, which would happen if one team won their group and the other finished second in theirs. I'm personally rooting for this.
